Don’t worry if it’s only halfway through Monday and your week already seems to have taken a wrong turn – take (Ear)heart from this archival account of aviation (mis)adventure. Amelia Earhart took off from Canada, heading for Paris…and, on this date in 1932, ended up in a field in Derry/Londonderry instead!
Undaunted, as the footage shows, Earhart made the best of her unexpected landing, which certainly delighted locals. For the owner of the field, Mrs Gallagher, the excitement of the event was mediated by the languor of the unusually summery May day – remember when we had one of those?!
