Description

This footage begins with Lady Jenkins, wife of the Lord Mayor, giving an address before an audience at the Ideal Home Exhibition, but the real charm of it kicks in when Adrienne McGuill appears beside a group of children. The popular host of Romper Room on Ulster Television was taking part in the Belfast Telegraph TV and Radio Show, back in the day when mass ownership of television at home was a novelty. The particular charm of this piece is that the stand she is presenting from is a show called “For the Very Young” – a kind of portable version of Romper Room. Not only are there working TV cameras on hand but the children can instantly see themselves appear on a television screen. A world of magic for the young children of 1963.
