Description

Some brief silent footage of the volunteers of the Civil Defence Corps out on training exercises. Long disbanded, the Civil Defence Corps was established in the UK in 1949 to deal with threats during the Cold War. Rather chillingly, this was principally concerned with maintaining order in the event of a nuclear attack. The Corps had a membership of over 300,000 in the 1950s during an era of palpable fear connected with the Cold War. However, they were disbanded in 1968.
