Gerry Fitt had been elected to the Northern Ireland parliament in 1962 as the sole representative of Irish labour (distinct from the Northern Ireland Labour Party which won four seats). He then left and joined up with the only representative of the Socialist Republican Party to form the Republican Labour Party. It was while representing this party that Fitt won the seat of Belfast West at the UK General Election of 1966 to take up a place in Westminster. This UTV interview with him in London asks him about the prospect of working alongside Northern Ireland’s other eleven MPs at Westminster, who were all from the Ulster Unionist Party, as well as whether he will be sitting on the government’s Labour Party benches.
