Description

Republican Labour candiate Gerry Fitt lodges the papers for his candidacy in the West Belfast constituency. He speaks to William McGookin about his intention to fight firstly as a Labour man, albeit one who wants to see a united Ireland.  

Gerry Fitt would go on to win the seat, defeating Unionist Jim Kilfedder. 

Notes

Gerry Fitt was the successful Republican Labour candidate for West Belfast who continued to represent the constituency until 1983. Fitt would later become the first leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), a position he held until 1979.
