Description

PM O’Neill visits Head Constable Finlay after he has been injured in running battles in Vernon Street, Belfast. Head Constable Finlay gives an account of the incident to Robin Walsh.

On Monday June 6, Rev Ian Paisley and his supporters marched to the Presbyterian General Assembly. He wanted to protest the "Romeward" leanings of the Presbyterian church. Their route took them through the Nationalist Cromac Street area. Locals gathered to prevent the march and rioting broke out. Several people, including Head Constable Finlay were injured.

At the General Assembly, the Paisley-led protesters jostled people arriving at the Assembly including Governor Erskine and his wife. Lady Erskine became unwell after the trouble and was to suffer from ill health for the rest of her life.
