Description

This film highlights the opening of a new service between Dublin and New York in December 1960. While Shannon Airport had already been linked to the USA with a direct flight, this was the first time that Aer Lingus had employed its new Boeing 720 jets to substantially reduce the flight time. Following shots of central New York, the film shows Belfast’s Lord Mayor, Robin Kinahan, who was one of the dignitaries invited on the maiden flight ahead of it being opened up to general passengers. In among all the many shots of shopping and meetings in New York, fans of early passenger aviation will enjoy the shots during flight of meals being prepared and what looks like a very cramped bar area.
