Description

The opening of the Northern Ireland Winter Assizes at Armagh Courthouse. The occasion is marked by a full army parade. The judge, Mr Justice Sheil, is escorted to the courthouse where he would address the Grand Jury. 

Notes

The courts of assizes or assizes were the highest criminal court in Ireland outside Dublin prior to 1924 (and continued in Northern Ireland until 1978).
