This poignant documentary captures the personal memories of railway workers and enthusiasts who recall the once extensive railway network that spanned the island of Ireland.

Until the early 1960s, nearly every town in Northern Ireland was connected by rail. However, due to years of neglect by successive political administrations and frequent disruption and damage to infrastructure caused by the Troubles, the Northern Ireland Railway network fell into severe disrepair. By the 1960s, the network was characterised by old rolling stock and poorly maintained tracks, leading to the gradual closure of lines. This decline left areas west of the River Bann almost completely devoid of railway services. The last steam locomotives were finally retired in 1970.

Railways to the West reflects on the sense of loss surrounding this bygone era, celebrates Northern Ireland’s railway heritage, and contemplates what might have been if the network had remained a vibrant and integral part of Northern Ireland’s transport infrastructure.
