Description

This recording captures an event held as part of Library Night, dedicated to the memory of Paddy Harpur, a poet and storyteller from County Tyrone. Introduced by a library representative, the evening is led by Harpur’s grandson, Sean Harpur, who shares insights into his grandfather’s life, work and legacy. Paddy Harpur, born in 1913, inherited retinitis pigmentosa, leading to blindness, yet he remained deeply engaged with local history and storytelling.

Sean Harpur recounts his journey in rediscovering his grandfather’s poetry, initially believing only a few pieces survived before uncovering a more extensive collection with the help of family members. The event features recitations of Harpur’s poetry, including Carrick, which reflects on the historic landscape of Carrick and its ties to the O’Neill chieftains. The reading captures themes of place, memory, and the impact of emigration on rural communities.

The recording also includes references to Harpur’s later works, such as his poem about the stranding of a whale, nicknamed Dopey, in the River Foyle in 1977. This blend of poetic reflection and factual documentation highlights Harpur’s unique perspective on both local and historical events.

This event serves as both a literary tribute and a personal exploration of heritage, offering valuable insight into the oral and written traditions of Northern Ireland.
