Description

Selkies perform Soon May the Wellerman Come in front of Portaferry Market House as part of a festival celebration. Originally a New Zealand folk ballad first published in the 1970s, Wellerman tells the story of supply ships – known as "wellermen" – that serviced whalers in the 19th century. The song gained renewed popularity in 2021 when a cover by Scottish singer Nathan Evans sparked a social media craze around sea shanties. Against the historic backdrop of Portaferry, Selkies bring their own interpretation to this enduring maritime tune, blending strong harmonies with a sense of tradition.
