Description

The Great Migration is a web series of short films about key moments in Ulster-Scots history. This episode delves into the early history of Worcester, Massachusetts, tracing the migration and settlement of Scotch-Irish families in the 1700s. Highlighting the challenges faced by these settlers, it explores their journey along narrow paths from Boston, their unwelcome reception in Worcester, and the eventual dispersal of these groups to other regions.

The story focuses on their contributions to agriculture, notably the introduction of seed potatoes, and the cultural tensions with existing communities. Despite hostility, including acts of violence such as church burnings, these families persevered, leaving a legacy of potato farming in New England, particularly in Maine and western Massachusetts.
