Located on a 25 acre site at Seapark, Carreras in Carrickfergus was once considered the most advanced tobacco factory in the world. Officially opened by Princess Margaret in May 1967, the factory employed around 1400 people at its height.
The company had a very active sports and social club and sponsored a number of events including road races and the Ulster Open Squash Championships.
Despite being the only tobacco company to receive the Queen’s Award to Industry for export achievement in 1977, the factory closed in the mid-1980s due to a drop in demand for tobacco products.
