Description

Countdown to the opening of the Ulster Television, in this rare footage.

Workmen put the finishing touches to the scaffold covered exterior of Havelock House, as Ulster Television prepares to broadcast for the first time.

Preparations continue inside, from the control room ato the main studio, where Laurence Olivier can be seen rehearsing the station's opening address to the people of Northern Ireland.

Final scenes show the Black Mountain transmitting station, which was commissioned by the Independent Television Authority to transmit ITV signals (as supplied by UTV) and would commence operation in 1959.
