A word premiere for the 2023 TradFest Temple Barcbakl: seanfhocail is a bold reimagining of traditional music for the modern age – combining archive samples with hip hop, eclectic beats, spoken word, jazz, R&B, soul and house. Composed and performed by the Belfast based producer cbakl alongside a number of guest artists, the show will bring a sense of musical adventure while being rooted in years of history - as evident in a new teaser video just released that combines a Chance The Rapper acapella with archive visuals and traditional music samples.

Starting out uploading tracks to SoundCloud aged 15, cbakl began gaining an organic following online and has now progressed to becoming one of Ireland’s most in demand beatmakers. Successfully transitioning focus from SoundCloud to Spotify & Apple Music, he has amassed over 10 million streams across various platforms. His music has been praised by the likes of Hot Press, District Magazine and Nialler9, while two of his songs featured on the RTE show Kin, starring Aiden Gillen (Game of Thrones, Peaky Blinders) and Emmett J. Scanlan (Peaky Blinders, The Fall) and supervised by David Holmes.

Having spent much of his career virtual crate digging to discover soul and jazz samples – creating new sounds via his production prowess – he now brings this approach to the world of traditional music – trawling the archives to collect musical, vocal and spoken snippets, bringing into a new setting.

He will be joined by guests from the worlds of music and spoken word to enhance his vision. Poets Natalya O’Flaherty and Sasha Terfous are no strangers to Temple Bar TradFest, having performed alongside Stephen Rea for President Michael D. Higgins in 2022. Both will be performing work inspired by their experience of modern Irish society and culture, backed by special compositions from cbakl designed to mirror the passion of the words and message. Also based in Belfast, Alicia Raye is a rapper, singer and activist who draws on her personal experiences to produce lyrics that are hard hitting and thought provoking. Fatboy is the lead singer and guitarist with Bricknasty, the Ballymun based band offering an inner city Dublin take on neo-soul and jazz. Matt Ó is one half of alternative hip-hop Tebi Rex and a pop / RnB solo artist, rooted in the Irish language and literature. The performance will be accompanied by a full visual backing, drawn from Northern Ireland Screen's Digital Film Archive material.
