Charles Witherspoon meets Joseph Warnock, pipe-maker and player. Mr Warnock started playing the pipes with the Tullylagan Pipe Band near Cookstown in 1924. He talks about the intricacies of the bagpipe and the skill needed to play one. Next Charles meets Andy Warnock, Joseph’s son, who makes pipes. Andy talks Charles through the craft of pipe-making and shows Charles an extraordinary set of pipes that were played at Culloden.
This report was shot for a series called 7 Degrees
West, a kind of early forerunner of Lesser Spotted Ulster, which saw features
on old traditions and off-the-beaten-track places. Although the complete
programmes, which included studio material, have gone from the archives, a
number of these filmed location shoots featuring Charlie on his bike have
survived. Look out for others in the Digital Film Archive.
