Description

Resilient Roosters: New Lodge Now and Then, shows clips filmed in the New Lodge in Belfast including murals, tower blocks, schools and parks. This is intercut with clips from the Northern Ireland Screen Digital Film Archive of places in Belfast during the conflict, as well as natural spaces in Belfast, .

The interviewers ask about what life was like growing up in Northern Ireland, as the women discuss the simplicity of life in their childhood, like eating sweets and visiting the zoo. They talk about the importance of kindness, and the sense of freedom that they experienced growing up, and finally how a younger generation can learn from these lessons of the past.

Notes

These films were made as part of an intergenerational project funded by PeacePlus, bringing together communities connected with Bridge of Hope, and younger people from the New Lodge Youth Centre and New Lodge Arts.

Bridge of Hope is a trauma-informed health and wellbeing service of Ashton’s Health & Wellbeing Department. They support individuals affected by the conflict, those experiencing poor physical and emotional health and individuals impacted by suicide and self-harm.

New Lodge Arts provide innovative, fun and educational activities that stretch right across the community and political divide in north Belfast. Working with approximately 2000 children and young people each year, New Lodge Arts has embedded itself at the heart of north Belfast.

New Lodge Youth Centre is a voluntary youth centre based in the Greater New Lodge area of North Belfast. Since 2012, they have worked hard to increase programme delivery and maximise the overall potential of the Centre by ensuring greater accessibility and usage by local young people. They provide a range of programmes for young people during the week and at the weekend that are designed to help them grow and develop.
