Description

In this news report we are introduced to Hero, a very basic ‘robot’ sitting on a desktop with a telephone on top of its head and dressed up in a bow tie. Hero introduces the piece but the synthesized technology of the time means that he is almost unintelligible. The reporter then speaks to Norman Irwin, representing the manufacturing industry at a showcase for robotics and automation in Newtownabbey and they discuss the possible benefits to industry of further automation.

It is noticeable how the reporter mispronounces the word ‘robot’ on every occasion. The report then moves back to the Computer Learning Centre where Nigel Williams explains how computers are here to stay. He describes how most people don’t know how a car works but can still learn to drive and compares it to computers, saying that you shouldn’t be worried about the technology and that anyone can learn how to use it. The report then closes with Hero handing back to the studio with his almost indecipherable speech.
