Description

The famous aircraft factory in east Belfast is the focus of this glimpse behind the scenes. Set up in Belfast 1936 by the Air Ministry, the factory was jointly owned by Harland and Wolff and Short Brothers, the latter of whom had been involved in making aircraft since 1908. Known as Short Brothers and Harland at the time of this 1960 film, the factory had played an important role in Britain’s wartime efforts and was a major industrial employer in Belfast in the post-war years. The film not only takes us around the factory floor but into the design room itself, as well as displaying detailed models and a mock-up of a cockpit.
