Description

Water is surely one of the most amazing things around. But where does it come from? Jane and Barney climb to the top of windy Slieve Croob in order to investigate matters further. The duo starts their journey here in the Mourne Mountains in search of the source of a very famous river which flows through Dromara, Dromore, Lisburn and finally flows into the sea in Belfast. Yes, it is Lagan.

Like many other rivers, Lagan starts off as a small spring up in the mountains, trickles down and gathers strength until it turns into a river. Today, Barney and Jane will follow Lagan all the way to Belfast and see what they find along the way. The river meanders along through the fields of County Down where people settled around it and build bridges to cross it. Nowadays water is stored in large reservoirs such as Ben Crom Dam and Reservoir in the Mourne. Jane and Barney cease the opportunity to explore the dam from up close, above and below.

Later on the journey Barney meets up with some of his friends from Botanic Primary School and Jane chats to Judith Bankhead, a park officer at the Lagan Valley Regional Park. Judith supplies little fishing nets so that the group can explore life in the river too. End of the trip takes us to Belfast. Lagan flows through the Port of Belfast out into the sea at Belfast Lough. This might be the end of the journey for Jane and Barney but journey of the river just begins in its new manifestation.
