Description

Queen Elizabeth II arrived in Northern Ireland for a two day visit in July 1966, primarily to officially open the new bridge named in her honour across the River Lagan in Belfast. In these scenes from the UTV news she can be seen driving through Belfast watched by cheering crowds - although, surprisingly, there are only a few seconds of footage of her on the actual bridge itself. Her motorcade can be seen receiving a particularly warm welcome from the citizens of Sandy Row as her car drives through an arch which had been erected for the July holidays and she can also be seen arriving and departing from Belfast’s City Hall.
