Description

This film explores the founding and evolution of paperxclips - an independent, queer-owned bookshop, barbershop, coffee shop, and community hub in Belfast. Fern and Ren, the couple behind this vibrant space, reflect on their journey, starting with Fern’s decision to leave an unfulfilling career in banking during the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020. The unique circumstances of the pandemic, including access to grants and community initiatives, provided them with the opportunity to develop the skills and resources needed to bring their vision to life.

In the interview, the couple discuss their approach to marketing and building a loyal clientele while staying true to their mission of creating a safe and welcoming space for the queer community. They share moving stories from customers and outline their aspirations for the business, emphasising the importance of preserving its role as a community sanctuary.

The interview was filme in paperxclips’ original North Street location. The shop has since relocated to Blackstaff Mill on Belfast’s Springfield Road, marking a new chapter in its story.
