Description

Those interested in television history can be thankful that Ulster Television was very good at recording for posterity news relating to itself. The extension to Havelock House with new studio space in 1962 was meticulously filmed throughout the development. The footage in this film shows some of the early work taking place with the demolition of nearby buildings to create the space for the expansion. We know from press reports at the time that this extension cost £100,000 – a lot of money in 1962. For context, that amount, allowing for inflation, is worth almost £2,000,000 in the mid-2020s. Included in this footage are scenes of the UTV time capsule being buried in the foundations by presenters Adrienne McGuill and Anne Gregg with that specific event taking place on 31/01/62.
