Description

In this ‘On Tour’ edition of Kelly’s People, Gerry Kelly and the crew travel to the west of the province to the heart of Fermanagh Lakelands. Throughout the programme Kelly talks with local people to find out more about this unique county.

The first guest of the evening is Prithu Das, a head of Hare Krishna temple on Upper Lough Erne on the Inish Rath Island. The Hare Krishna Centre was established here in 1985. The second guest is Éamon de Buitléar, a prominent Irish wildlife filmmaker, who talks about work and his fascination with otters. The one and only Pat Cassidy joins in with an old Halloween custom of ‘turning the waistcoat’ and a few old school games to try out. He also presents Kelly with a gift, a blackthorn shillelagh.

After a performance by The Sands Family, Kelly meets the audience and interviews a variety of interesting people from the area such as Billy Forde, a former gamekeeper at Florence Court, Dorothy Pendry from the Craft Centre, Harold Hamilton who was a president of the Ulster Farmers’ Union, just to list a few. The discussion also turns to cross border activities such as smuggling and the skill of poitín (poteen) making.

Notes

The programme also includes an exerpt from Éamon de Buitléar's film on the habitats and behaviour of otters.
