Description

Join Gerry Kelly, his guests and the studio audience to discuss emigration, the reasons why many (not only) young people decide to leave and the impact it might have on the society.  The studio panel is composed of Rt Hon David Bleakley, Robert Myers (American Consul General), Alasdair McLaughlin (Director CBI) and Dr Dennis Kennedy (EEC Northern Ireland) and together with the studio audience represent a variety of opinions on the matter.

Firstly, Kelly looks back at the topic of the previous programme, diets, and the viewers reactions to it in the regular Kelly’s Eye segment. The rest of the programme delves into the issues around emigration. For centuries millions of Irish people, from north and south, have used emigration as a means of finding better life elsewhere. In the context of the Troubles and increasingly globalized world, emigration remains a very real and attractive option for many young people in the 80’s Northern Ireland. Gerry Kelly and his guests explore the benefits and possible drawbacks of the issue. The programme also includes an interview with Ian Sanderson, a former UTV employee, who emigrated to Australia in 1982 and who gives an insight into his motivations and experiences as an emigrant.
