Description

Freddie Gilroy was one of the top Irish boxers of his generation, having won bronze at the Olympics and being crowned British, Commonwelath and European champion at bantamweight. His all-Belfast fight against John Caldwell in 1962 for the British title was considered one of the greatest contests ever to have been staged on the island of Ireland. Following that successful fight there had been ongoing calls for a rematch. However, following some injuries, Gilroy still hadn’t fought again a year later when this interview took place. Gilroy explains why he was giving up his British and European titles due to weight issues and the timing of a proposed fight. As it turned out, Gilroy would never fight again and a great talent was lost to local boxing.
