Description

Ivan Little reports for Good Evening Ulster from Newry where a hawthorn tree has stoked up tales of local folklore. Despite being sited in the middle of a building site earmarked for new housing, the workmen refuse to dig it up or cut it down, as locals believe it to be a fairy tree, with the fates turning on anyone who would cut down such a landmark.

Some of the locals come forward with tales of those who fell foul of such actions in the past. The council has offered a bounty to anyone prepared to cut it down, but has met with no one brave enough. The tree has even became a political issue, with Sinn Fein insisting that the wishes of the locals should be respected.
