In the third year of the Rathmullan Film Challenge, amateur filmmakers were given 15 pieces of film from the UTV Archive and creative and editing training from Póca Productions. The task was to create a completely new piece, telling an original story – this year, as Gaelige.
Carol Wilson’s Líomanáid, a tale of a gift that slowly revealed its value, was this year’s worthy winner.
Of the process, Carol says:
I was excited about watching the archival footage and seeing what inspirations would come. At first the footage reminded me of a song I’d recently started about feeling free in nature, so I initially went that direction. But when I went back to the archival footage to search for more scenes for the song, an idea suddenly came to me for a mockumentary. It made me laugh so I thought I might enjoy making it, as I’d never done anything like that before. I had great fun selecting the clips and bringing the story to life with sounds and music. I loved it.
Bhí sceitimíní orm féachaint ar na píosaí scannáin cartlainne agus féachaint cad iad na spreagthaí a thiocfadh. Ar dtús chuir an scannán i gcuimhne dom amhrán a thosaigh mé le déanaí ag mothú saor sa dúlra, agus mar sin chuaigh mé an treo sin ar dtús. Ach nuair a chuaigh mé ar ais chuig an scannán cartlainne chun tuilleadh radharc a fháil don amhrán, tháinig smaoineamh chugam go tobann le haghaidh magadh. Chuir sé gáire orm agus mar sin shíl mé go mbainfinn taitneamh as é a dhéanamh, mar ní dhearna mé a leithéid riamh cheana. Bhí an-spraoi agam ag roghnú na ngearrthóg agus ag tabhairt an scéal beo le fuaimeanna agus ceol. Ba bhreá liom é.
