Description

This report covers the difficulties that blind and partially-sighted people experience when seeking work. John Geoghegan lost his eyesight in 1983. He's highly qualified, having completed several training courses, but he struggles to find work. Employers are reluctant to hire him due to his blindness.

Geoghegan's experience is typical for many people with blindness. A report commissioned by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) found that half of employers wouldn't hire blind or partially sighted workers. Discrimination is rife in every part of the job recruitment process, from job applications being placed in places difficult to access, to prospective employers' reluctance to accommodate the needs of potential employees.

An Act to prevent discrimination against people with disabilities is due to come into force, but the RNIB questions its effectiveness. Many areas of the legislation are vague, including instructions on how employers can make the workplace a more equal place. Watch the report to find out more!
