Good Evening Ulster reports on the election results for
the Westminster constituencies forced into holding by-elections by the mass
resignation of Unionist MPs in protest at the Anglo-Irish Agreement. From Newry
and Armagh we see the acceptance speech of SDLP deputy leader Seamus Mallon who
has managed to defeat the resigning MP seeking re-election, Bill Nicholson of
the Ulster Unionist Party. Mallon calls for no triumphalism in the result and
extends his sympathy to Nicholson.
There is also a
report from South Down, where controversial former Conservative government
minister Enoch Powell has managed to hold onto the tightly-contested seat. The
cameras are also at Omagh, where the Reverend William McCrea is interviewed
following the large increase in his margin of victory in Mid Ulster. There are
also the thoughts of Ian Paisley from North Antrim and William Ross from East
Londonderry, who have both comfortably held onto their seats.
