Description

A report for UTV Live on the granting of a visa to Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams and his subsequent visit to the USA for a series of meetings and speeches. Previously, Adams had always been denied a visa to travel to the USA on account of his support for the armed conflict in Northern Ireland. However, President Clinton had offered the prospect of one if he met a deadline for renouncing violence.

Just before the deadline expired, Adams used an interview on RTE to suggest that he personally wanted to see an end to the IRA and the visa was granted. He appeared in the US alongside John Hume of the SDLP and John Alderdice of the Alliance Party.
