Description

Ken Reid reports for UTV Live from Downing Street on the latest British Irish Summit meeting. Following the general election in the Republic of Ireland, Bertie Ahern has replaced John Bruton as the Irish taoiseach. This is his first meeting with UK prime minister Tony Blair, himself very new in the job. However, differences of opinion have come to the fore as the annual stand-off at Drumcree once more looms large. Unusually, the two leaders do not give a joint press conference outside Downing Street afterwards, but Ahern later speaks to the press separately at the Irish Embassy.

The issue of Drumcree is problematic to the talks and the peace process, and David Trimble is interviewed by Reid as part of the piece, delivering a sharp rebuke to Ahern, who angered Unionists with his views on the march earlier in the week.
