Description

Elections get under way for Northern Ireland's new elected Assembly following the acceptance of the Good Friday Agreement by the public in a referendum. This report by Ivan Little for UTV Live focuses on the count at David Trimble's constituency of Upper Bann. Anti-Agreement unionists were hoping to deliver an electoral blow to the UUP leader, and as votes are being counted you can tell the pressure Trimble is under, with even his own team predicting that the SDLP's Brid Rogers will out-poll him.

However, as the count moves on, Trimble emerges victorious, topping the poll in terms of first-preference votes, even if his UUP running mates are less successful. He is heckled at a subsequent press conference, highlighting that not all within unionism are happy with the peace process.
