Description

Sharon Hall reports for UTV Live on the historic polling day as the people of Northern Ireland give their verdict in a referendum on the Good Friday Agreement. After a peace process which has taken five years to produce an agreed position between the negotiating parties, polls have opened across the province.

There is footage of some of the main political figures turning up at polling stations to cast their vote, including David Trimble in Lisburn, Ian Paisley in East Belfast and Gerry Adams in West Belfast. Voting is already being reports as brisk with expectations that there would be a very high turnout.

The report also draws attention to a slightly overlooked aspect to the day of voting, in that there is also a referendum being held in the Republic of Ireland on dropping Articles 2 and 3 of their constitution, which claim sovereignty over Northern Ireland.
