Description

A report by Letitia Fitzpatrick for UTV Live on the first visit to Northern Ireland by Tony Blair since becoming British prime minister. Visiting the town of Armagh, he delivers a famous keynote speech in which he calls out to Sinn Fein and all those yet to fully renounce violence. The most memorable quote is, "The Settlement Train is leaving. I want you on that train, but it is leaving anyway and I will not allow it to wait for you. You cannot hold the process to ransom any longer, so end the violence and end it now."

The speech is well received by both the SDLP and UUP, although less so by the DUP. Martin McGuinness is interviewed here about wanting to speak to the government. The speech is typical of many by Blair during this period, urging a process for everyone, but warning that entry to talks can only come about through a renewed ceasefire.
