Description

Susan Miller reports for UTV Live on a day of history from the referendum count at the King's Hall in Belfast. The result of 71.12% for the Yes campaign is met with an outpouring of emotion and celebration.

Sitting in studio at the count, David Trimble claims that a majority of both unionists and nationalists endorsed the Agreement and John Hume thanks the electorate who, he says, clearly want politicians to work together. Ian Paisley, on the other hand, makes a counter-claim to Trimble, insisting that a majority of unionists voted No. Mo Mowlam addresses the press, and looking forward to the next stage of the process and to the election of an Assembly. Gerry Adams calls for the UUP to meet his party directly for talks to continue discussions on remaining issues, while John Alderdice of the Alliance looks forward to the possibilities of devolved government.

At the end of a long process of talks, with many setbacks and wrong turns, the people of Northern Ireland have overwhelmingly endorsed the peace process and the negotiated Agreement.
