Description

Sharon Hall reports for UTV Live as talks at Stormont centred on reaching an agreement to end the conflict in Northern Ireland enter their final hours. Following a press call by Tony Blair and Bertie Ahern, Mo Mowlam greets the press and tells them, "after 30 years we have a chance today to stop the violence and murders we've seen by finding an accommodation."

UUP deputy leader John Taylor updated the press on his party's talks with the Irish government. He predicts that within the next few hours one of the three strands of talks will either be resolved or the whole thing will collapse. He has been giving a running tally throughout the week of the percentage chance of doing a deal, which started at 5%, fell to 4%, but which he now puts at 10%. However, he feels if the issue with the Irish government can be resolved the chances will leap to 50%.

David Andrews of the Irish government refers to these talks and hopes that the deadline can still be met. Meanwhile, John Hume says, "the challenge to both unionists and ourselves... is to build a dynamic partnership - that is the opportunity that is there." Martin McGuinness also speaks to the press, saying that the difficulty is that there are some in the Unionist leadership who do not want change.

The negotiations end up going well beyond the midnight deadline, but eventually the remaining differences are met with compromise, and the historic deal is completed in time to be announced on Good Friday.
