Description

Ken Reid reports for UTV Live on the reaction to a third year of problems between Orange Order marchers and nationalist residents of the Garvaghy Road. Irish taoiseach Bertie Ahern is interviewed, explaining that Tony Blair informed him in advance at their recent summt of the decision to use the security forces to allow the march through. Although he regrets the decision, he understands the position Blair is in. SDLP leader John Hume appeals for calm, despite a feeling the nationalist community has been betrayed.

In the event, a wave of rioting broke out across the country for a second successive year, with widespread injuries to members of the security forces and huge damage to property. Martin McGuinness, Ian Paisley Jnr and David Ervine also share their thoughts in the piece as Northern Ireland once more enters into a summer of violence.
