Description

Letitia Fitzpatrick reports for UTV Live on the ongoing negotiations at Stormont in search of a peace agreement. The day starts with all parties expressing condolences for Irish taoiseach Bertie Ahern on the death of his mother. Secretary of state Mo Mowlam then states that she feels there were good negotiations over the weekend and that she is impressed with the courage of everyone in trying to find solutions.

David Trimble and Seamus Mallon speak individually on areas which are still causing difficulties, and Mitchell McLaughlin of Sinn Féin praises the introduction of the deadline for focusing people's minds. Gary McMichael of the UDP declares, "The big question is whether we can close the gap between unionists and nationalists. I'm not sure that we can but neither do I believe that it's impossible." Publication of a draft document by Senator George Mitchell is being held up over disagreement on the powers of a Northern Ireland Assembly but, while there are still significant divisions, there is a sense that the remaining areas of difficulty are narrowing.
