Description

Following the first election for the new Northern Ireland after the Good Friday Agreement, the Assembly members have to nominate candidates for the two First Minister posts, equal in power but with different titles.

David Trimble of the UUP and Seamus Mallon of the SDLP are the two successful candidates and this report by Niall Donnelly for UTV Live shows their selection in the temporary Assembly chamber, followed by a press conference they hold outside. As they talk of the future and pose for warm handshakes before the press, it marks the conclusion of a long journey to take violence out of Northern Ireland society.
