Description

A UTV report on the week of events leading up to the beginning of all-party talks at Stormont. These talks would eventually last for nearly two years and lead to what became the Good Friday Agreement. However, as the report details, the structure of the talks was still in a state of flux just days before they started, with disagreements even between the British and Irish governments on the role of Senator George Mitchell and what his powers should be.

There is also mention in the report of the killing of a member of the Gardai in the Republic of Ireland during a robbery, suspected to be the work of the IRA, highlighting the continuing problem of violence at the very moment that peace talks are due to begin.
