Description

Ivan Little reports for UTV Live on a memorable performance from Belfast's Waterfront Hall. During the campaigning for the referendum on the Good Friday Agreement a special concert had been put on for Sixth Formers from all sections of society to enthuse the 'Yes' vote among them. The heavyweight line-up included U2 and Downpatrick's high-flying indie rock band, Ash.

During the concert, Bono of U2 calls upon David Trimble and John Hume to join him on stage, then stands between them clasping and lifting the arms of them together, to a wave of acclaim from the gathered young people. Decades later, this will stand as one of the most iconic images of the entire peace process, marking the triumphant celebration of of what was achieved. The peace process appeared doomed to failure for most of its duration, but now the possibility of an alternative to violence seems suddenly real and is emphatically endorsed by the next generation.

Trimble is interviewed by Little after the event, as are many of the schoolchildren present who are clearly conscious of the historical importance of what they have just witnessed.
