Description

Ken Reid and Sharon Hall reports for UTV Live from the peace talks at Stormont, which have now entered their final two days. Tony Blair has arrived, and holds a breakfast meeting with Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern. Afterwards, he faces the press and expresses optimism that a deal can be done over the next two days.

A host of voices are heard in this report, including David Andrews of the Irish government, Gerry Adams of Sinn Féin, David Ervine of the PUP, Gary McMichael of the UDP and John Hume of the SDLP. All expressed hope of a deal but warn that there are still areas of disagreement.

John Alderdice of the Alliance Party, who urged Tony Blair to come to the talks the previous day, now states that he feels the process is back on the rails again. Negotiations are complicated by Bertie Ahern having to leave for his mother's funeral in Dublin, but there is a gathering sense of pace as the talks come down to the wire.
