A
report on Good Friday 1998 as the all-party talks at Stormont successfully
conclude with an Agreement to end the Northern Ireland conflict and set up new
institutions of local government. Senator George Mitchell speaks before the
various delegates as cameras are allowed into the talks arena. He thanks the
delegates and expresses his hopes that the people of Northern Ireland can now
enjoy a better future.
Delegates then take turns to thank Mitchell for his work in the process, among
them John Hume, Gerry Adams and David Trimble. The relief in the room, mixed
with a joyful sense of achievement, is evident after an intense and very late
finish to the talks the previous night. Following this day, the task now moves
on to trying to sell the deal to the people of Northern Ireland in order for
the Agreement to come into force.
