Description

A UTV Live report on the appointment in the USA of a Special Advisor to Northern Ireland from the American government. President Clinton has handpicked a loyal ally in the shape of Senator George Mitchell to work closely with all interested parties in the peace process. As someone of Irish heritage he has a special connection to the island. Economic investment in Northern Ireland to try and normalise society is also part of his brief, in the hope that prosperity could help to diminish the need for violence.

Mitchell's appointment was a pivotal moment in the process as he would prove to be a tireless worker on behalf of peace and a crucial figure in the negotiations that led to the Good Friday Agreement.
